Abstract: We’ll introduce Vietoris-Rips complex and its uses in applied topology. If a data set is sampled from some unknown manifold, then as more and more samples are drawn, the Vietoris-Rips persistent homology of the dataset converges to the Vietoris-Rips persistent homology of the manifold. We’ll define a Vietoris-Rips complex on finite metric spaces and relate it to some popular complexes related to hypercube graphs and Kneser graphs; then discuss what is known about the homotopy types of these complexes.
